Statistical Power Analysis

Statistical Power Analysis

Statistical power analysis is the best answer to queries like “What sample size do I need?” It is the technique used in the design process that helps a researcher in determining the sample size. It depends on a number of factors such as the purpose of the study, population size, the risk of selecting a “bad” sample, and the allowable sampling error. The best way to determine the sample size we conduct a power data analysis for every topic. We accomplish this by either referring to any pilot data you have, or to parameters in the relevant literature. If neither of the options is possible, then we use “rule of thumb” to find the effective size. We follow these three considerations in a power analysis process:

  • The general approach to find the sample size assumes that a simple random sample is the sampling design. The complex designs (e.g. stratified random samples) must consider the variances of subpopulations, strata, or clusters before estimating the size.
  • The sample size should be apt for the planned SPSS Data Analysis. For descriptive statistics any reasonable sample size is fine. On the other hand, a sample size n=150+ is needed for multiple regression, analysis of covariance, or log-linear analysis. Moreover, an adjustment in the sample size may be needed to accommodate a comparative analysis of subgroups. Skewed distributions can cause deviations from normality even for moderate size samples, causing the need for a larger sample.
  • However, there are sample size formulas that help in finding the number of responses that need to be obtained. Many researchers just add 25%+ to the planned sample size to compensate for persons that the researcher must remove from the sample for some reason.
